The story is narrated from a first-person perspective, alternating between selections of main characters, but primarily from the viewpoint of Simon Snow and Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch, aka Baz Pitch.įrom the very first page, the magical nature of the story and Harry Potter-like feeling is established. This novel is separated into 4 sections, each more grandiloquent than the last. If you love Rainbow Rowell and J.K Rowling, you are guaranteed to enjoy every single page of this masterpiece. Carry On is set in a world of its own, so readers can read it individually as well. Published in 2015, this 528 page tale is a magical take on the life of Simon Snow who first appeared in Rowell’s Fangirl. That book was Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. She teaches at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.On a rainy day in June, I was at my local library when a particular book caught my eye because of its stunning cover illustration. Mary Quattlebaum is a children’s author and regular reviewer for The Washington Post. So I didn’t feel like I was always missing something. Īs a teen, what magical power or item would you have wanted? How about now? I think Simon and Baz have inspired the most fanfiction because there was just enough about them in “Fangirl.” People could imagine them, but I left their whole lives open. I don’t! I love that it’s being written, but I need to keep my headcanons straight for my own books. Do you ever check out the stories online? “Fangirl” has inspired quite a lot of fanfiction. He’s my favorite character to write, from any of my books. I think that might be fun! I’d love to keep writing Baz.

Given that fantasy novels tend to come in sets of at least three or four, do you plan a sequel for “Carry On”? This whole book is me breaking my favorite stories and tropes apart and asking, “Why?” And then asking myself if I can pull off a Chosen One story of my own.

You ask yourself why you loved them or needed them. And I think that, as you get older, you go back to the stories you loved when you were young, and you interrogate them. But my audience tends to be older teens and adults. I write the books for myself and try not to think too much about who will read them. Was there anything you felt was missing in fantasy for young people that you wanted to play with in “Carry On”? Even though I created these characters and their magic for “Fangirl,” this felt very much like writing a stand-alone book. I knew they’d know what trope I was twisting. I love to play with pop culture, so it was fun to know that I was writing a book for people who have read the same books that I have and watched the same movies. What did you enjoy about taking the Simon Snow fanfiction tale from “Fangirl” and expanding it into its own novel? I had a lot of stuff in me about sacrifice and honor and responsibility - and that all came out when I started writing.

When I was writing “Carry On” - and the character of Simon Snow, especially - I was in a very Luke Skywalker/Harry Potter/Frodo place.Īlso, I went to church three times a week for 18 years, and the Bible is full of Chosen One stories. It was like a candle burning in the back of my head.

In an e-mail interview, Rowell discussed her writing, the pleasures of playing with pop culture and fantasy tropes, and whether she plans a sequel.Īs a kid, did you have a favorite fantasy book or character?įor me, everything starts with “Star Wars.” I saw it the first time when I was 4 or 5, and it was the story for me, for decades. Simon is supposed to save the world, but like many teens, he’s stressed, confused and frequently hungry. Rainbow Rowell, author of bestselling young adult books such as “ Eleanor & Park,” is back with another story about the endearingly awkward teen wizard who first appeared two years ago in “Fangirl.” In her new novel, “ Carry On,” Simon Snow (clearly a Harry Potter analog) bumbles through a magical school that includes a headmaster in a Robin Hood costume, a blasé girlfriend and an intriguing vampire nemesis named Baz.
